How Down Syndrome Can Lead to NY SSD Claims
Frank J. Dito, Jr.
Some disabling conditions, such as Down syndrome, affect multiple body systems. Due to the seriousness of these conditions, individuals may be eligible to receive benefits through Social Security disability claims in NY by consulting with New York disability lawyers.
Down syndrome is a debilitating condition. It occurs when there are 3 copies of chromosome 21 present in cells as opposed to the normal 2 copies. This extra chromosomal material affects the development of the body and brain overall. Characteristics of Down syndrome include late physical development and varying levels of mental retardation.
Types of Down Syndrome
- Non-mosaic Down syndrome - chromosome 21 affects every cell throughout the body. This occurs in 98% of people who have Down syndrome.
- Mosaic Down syndrome - only some cells within the body are affected with an extra copy of chromosome 21.
Down syndrome affects multiple systems within the body including mental, neurological and skeletal systems. Furthermore, it can lead to impaired vision, hearing impairment and heart disease.
