In a report from Health Day, preliminary results of a genetic test for breast cancer patients show promise.
The genetic test has demonstrated the potential to predict whether a breast cancer patient will benefit from specific types of treatment. When patients undergo the right type of treatment, it can make a significant difference in the outcome of their situation.
It could also prevent unnecessary types of treatment, such as chemotherapy, in patients who wouldn't really benefit from it.
So far 92% of the women involved in the study responded to their treatment just as the genetic test indicated they would. This gave them an 18% lower risk of dying, in comparison to those women who didn't respond successfully to treatment.
While researchers are excited by the successful preliminary results, they do say further testing needs to be done. The hope is that one day the difficult decisions plaguing doctors and patients will be alleviated when it comes to breast cancer care.
