A hit-and-run accident on Staten Island leaves an elderly couple dead. The incident took place at approximately 7:15 PM on Wednesday evening, November 25, 2009 outside of a Staten Island church.

The victims have been identified as Peter Sabados, 78 and Lillian Sabados, 77, both from Staten Island. According to authorities, the couple was hit as they were walking to a Thanksgiving Mass being held at Staten Island Church. They were bringing cans of food for the poor.

Rescue workers transported the couple to Staten Island University Hospital. Peter Sabados was pronounced dead approximately 45 minutes after the accident occurred. Lillian Sabados was pronounced dead the following day, according to police.

Police have identified the suspect, Allmir Lekperic, 26, who fled the scene. However, he turned himself into authorities the following day. Lekperic was charged with leaving the scene of a fatal accident, as well as driving with a suspended license.

According to a law enforcement source, Lekperic’s driver’s license had been suspended approximately 29 times since 2006. He has also been stopped several times for not wearing a seat belt and for talking on a cell phone while operating a vehicle.

The Staten Island accident is still under investigation by local authorities. It has not been determined as to why Lekperic hit the elderly couple.
